Woodrow Wilson first married Ellen Louise Axson in Savannah, Georgia. They met in April of 1883 and were engaged five months later.
Wilson had three daughters with Ellen. The three are pictured standing in the painting to the right. Born in 1886, Margaret Woodrow Wilson, followed by Jessie Woodrow Wilson born in 1887, and Eleanor Randolph Wilson born in 1889.
Ellen was able to see two of her daughters married at the White house before she got sick with Bright's disease and died in the White house on August 6th, 1914. Wilson was so devastated at her loss that he hoped to be assassinated.

At 58, Wilson the married Edith Bolling Galt. Edith was 43 and a widow. They married on December 18, 1915. She was very intelligent and was Wilson's confidante during the 18 hour workdays of the war, she became both nurse and executive secretary after a stroke crippled the President in the fall of 1919. Edith and Woodrow are pictured to the left working in the white house.
