Woodrow Wilson is known as one of the top 10 U.S. presidents. Wilson was the President at Princeton University and the Governor of New Jersey from 1911-1913. In 1912, Wilson began his campaign for his Democratic presidential nomination. He ran against the 27th president William Taft but defeated him and was elected the 28th president of the United States November 5th 1912. Woodrow Wilson served two terms at president, was reelected November 7, 1916.
The major issues during his presidency was World War I. Even though, Wilson's known slogan was "he kept us out of war" and trying to remain neutral. There were problems with Germany and Mexico and an intercepted message that got back to Wilson that Germany promised Mexico financial support to reconquer the lost territory in New Mexico, Texas, and Arizona.
There were long term causes of World War I but the immediate cause was the assassination of Archduke Francis Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary by Gavrilo Princip, who was a 19 year old Serbian nationalist, in Sarajevo in June 1914.
Wilson appealed to the Americans to remain strictly neutral. The actions of Germany was out control with submarine warfare. The British kept on trying to persuade the U.S. to join allies. In May 1915 a German submarine torpedoed the British Liner Lusitania of the coast of Ireland, killing 1200, including 120 American passengers. On April 2 1917 he asked Congress for a declaration of war on Germany.
